It was great to start the day with a full card of qualified dogs and equally good to have half the card filled with handlers who probably hadn’t even been to a spaniel trial ten years back. The trial was run in bramble woodland with a great and even supply of game. Everyone was respectful and quiet and the birds were where they were needed. The guns shot really well and all the dogs got flushes and the opportunity for clean retrieves. There were a few unlucky dogs today but the majority of the card completed the trial with the trial finishing at 12.30pm. The judges commented on the high standard of dogs across the card and gave the following awards:1st) Chadsmynydd Crystal (FT Ch Hollydrive Bert X Whitebeam Warbler) – Nathan Quinnmaking her up to FTCh (subject to KC approval).2nd) & GC Shalloakwest React of Spanbella – handled by Steve Brewer and owned by Tina Nicholas3rd) FT Ch Skronedale Milly of Quailhollow – Adam Kerr4th) Rushivy Eva – Harry LawCOMsGemraer Don Dynamo – Adam BrownSpanbella Supershot Shelby – Josh Gresty

ESS Club Novice Trial5th November 2025Checkley Wood Shoot, by kind permission of Ivor & Nick BeavisJudges: Alice Wise & Steve BrewerGuns: Karl Harrison, Josh Gresty, David Ross & Phil WaltonHelpers: Roy Proctor, Chris Durkin, Kirsty McKenzie, Sam Hazelwood & Sam ThatcherSponsors: Skinners & Gamekeepers GoodsThank you to everyone who contributed to the trial – hosts, judges, guns, helpers, sponsors and competitors! It takes all of you to make a trial work and the support is very much appreciated. As always at Checkley there was a great supply of game, proper spaniel cover and a team of guns who understand dog work and shot well. We lost a number of dogs fairly early on and the end of the second runs only one dog remained.1st place and GC was awarded to Dawsonlee Tandem of Smallbrooks (FTCh Rytex Ringo x FTCh Rytex Rapeds), handled by Garret Marson. It was lovely to see the dog hunting hard and keeping its head in challenging situations. Congratulations Garret and all the very best of luck in opens.
